Summary

At 46mm, this IWC BIG Pilot's Watch (Große Fliegeruhr), made in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and with model reference number IW500401, is a BIG, impression-making and ultra-stylish watch with a classic design, the dial and hands of which are inspired by classic aeroplane-cockpit instrumentation.

This watch, which was new in 2006, comes with its box and papers/books. Our unique stock/item number for this watch is WSN 27.

A slim bezel leaves more room for the large and very clear, matt-black dial. The hour and minute hands are lumed, as are four of the hour markers.

Notice also that big and distinctive winding crown, which screws down to the casing to support the watch's water resistance of 6 bar, equivalent to approx 60m.

Highlights of this model include:

  •     Pellaton automatic winding
  •     7-day power reserve
  •     A novel power-reserve display
  •     A soft-iron inner case to protect the movement against magnetic fields
  •     Shock-proof case design in stainless steel

The gently domed crystal over the dial is made from ultra-hard sapphire (hardness grade 9) for scratch resistance, and features an anti-reflective treatment to make reading the dial even easier.

The movement inside this very special watch is an automatic (i.e., self-winding) mechanical one, although it can also be manually wound. This movement has 44(!) jewel (i.e., synthetic ruby) bearings, and provides centre hour, minute and seconds hands and a date indicator at the 6 o'clock position.

Perhaps the stand-out feature of this watch is its very unusual, impressive and very useful 7-day (168-hour) power reserve when fully wound. Most mechanical-movement watches will typically have only around 2 or 3 days of power reserve once fully wound, meaning that if you don't wear your watch for a day or two, it may have stopped next time you come to put it on again (unless you keep it in a watch winder). That's far less likely to happen with this watch, making the IWC BIG Pilot a more practical watch if you don't intend wearing it every day! And that's even more the case if you make use of the novel subsidiary dial at the 3 o'clock position, which indicates the amount of power remaining in days.

The watch also features quick date setting, stop-seconds for accurate time setting and a patented 'Pellaton' automatic self-winding system, which winds the watch in both directions. The watch is mounted on an IWC black leather strap.

Price and Guarantee

As of Sept 2019, the current equivalent IWC model (the IW501001) has a list price of £11,900 incl VAT. And yet you could have this excellent-condition, very stylish example, something that would be perfect for someone who likes to be a bit different, for just £7,500 fully inclusive. Compared to buying brand new, that represents a saving of £4,400!

However, your cash outlay could be significantly less than this, because we may also consider your old watch in part exchange. (If there's a possibility that you might like to do a part-exchange deal, please bring in your watch—with its box and papers if you still have them—when you visit our store.)

Also note that we now offer interest-free credit: please contact the shop for details.

Alternatively, send us a message now by tapping on the ENQUIRE button below.

We would suggest you call into our shop if you are interested in this item: there really is no better way to check out a watch that you might be interested in owning than to come and take a closer look at it. Inspect it, handle it, try it on for size and ask us about it! Of course, while you're here, you might also wish to browse our large collection of other watches. In any case, you'd be very welcome, so why not call in soon?

We're located just off St Ann's Square, in the heart of Manchester's city-centre shopping district. Here, you're typically able to browse around a hundred and fifty or so pre-owned Swiss watches that are out on display, each of which has been carefully selected, based on its condition, from among the many more watches that we see and handle every day. (To a large extent, that's in effect what we do: we 'filter' pre-owned watches. Only the very best of what we buy in or receive in part exchange deals make it onto our display shelves and onto this website. The rest are sold on, for example to smaller dealers in the trade.)

With that many prime-condition, pre-owned Swiss watches to choose from, we probably offer you the best chance in the region (and far beyond) of being able to find your next—or indeed your first—watch of the sort of calibre and in the sort of condition that you deserve; a watch that will leave you feeling fully satisfied that you've chosen just the right one.

When enquiring about this particular item, please quote its unique stock/item number, which is WSN 27, so we can more easily identify and locate the watch and its details for you. Thank you.
