At 46mm, this IWC BIG Pilot's Watch (Große Fliegeruhr), made in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and with model reference number IW500401, is a BIG, impression-making and ultra-stylish watch with a classic design, the dial and hands of which are inspired by classic aeroplane-cockpit instrumentation.
This watch, which was new in 2006, comes with its box and papers/books. Our unique stock/item number for this watch is WSN 27.
A slim bezel leaves more room for the large and very clear, matt-black dial. The hour and minute hands are lumed, as are four of the hour markers.
Notice also that big and distinctive winding crown, which screws down to the casing to support the watch's water resistance of 6 bar, equivalent to approx 60m.
Highlights of this model include:
- Pellaton automatic winding
- 7-day power reserve
- A novel power-reserve display
- A soft-iron inner case to protect the movement against magnetic fields
- Shock-proof case design in stainless steel
The gently domed crystal over the dial is made from ultra-hard sapphire (hardness grade 9) for scratch resistance, and features an anti-reflective treatment to make reading the dial even easier.
The movement inside this very special watch is an automatic (i.e., self-winding) mechanical one, although it can also be manually wound. This movement has 44(!) jewel (i.e., synthetic ruby) bearings, and provides centre hour, minute and seconds hands and a date indicator at the 6 o'clock position.
Perhaps the stand-out feature of this watch is its very unusual, impressive and very useful 7-day (168-hour) power reserve when fully wound. Most mechanical-movement watches will typically have only around 2 or 3 days of power reserve once fully wound, meaning that if you don't wear your watch for a day or two, it may have stopped next time you come to put it on again (unless you keep it in a watch winder). That's far less likely to happen with this watch, making the IWC BIG Pilot a more practical watch if you don't intend wearing it every day! And that's even more the case if you make use of the novel subsidiary dial at the 3 o'clock position, which indicates the amount of power remaining in days.
The watch also features quick date setting, stop-seconds for accurate time setting and a patented 'Pellaton' automatic self-winding system, which winds the watch in both directions. The watch is mounted on an IWC black leather strap.
