This is the highly-prized James Cameron variant of the Rolex DEEPSEA SEA-DWELLER, the "Challenger Edition" with model number 116660 and D-Blue Dial.

This model commemorates the historic solo dive by James Cameron (director of Titanic and Avatar) into the deepest place under the oceans, the bottom of the Mariana Trench, some 11 kilometres below the surface of the Pacific. Scaled-up versions of this watch were carried on the submersible he used: they emerged unharmed despite having to withstand a crushing pressure of approx 12 tonnes on the crystal alone.

From brilliant blue to bottomless black, the two-colour gradient of the dial on this exemplary and canonical diver's watch celebrates Cameron's journey. This and the green 'DEEPSEA' insignia on the dial set this highly sought-after model apart from the standard Deepsea.

The construction of the Deepsea's case provides exceptional strength, waterproofness and pressure resistance due to its exclusive Ringlock system. This enables the watch to resist the massive pressure exerted by water at the staggering depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet) to which it is water resistant. The construction is based on three elements: a nitrogen-alloyed steel central ring, which forms the backbone of the system, a 5 mm-thick, domed sapphire crystal and a case back made from grade 5 titanium.

The Chromalight display of the dial has a distinctive blue glow which lasts up to twice as long as that of standard luminescent materials. The zero marker on the watch's uni-directionally rotatable diver's time-lapse bezel, in the form of a triangle, is also visible in the dark reaches of the ocean thanks to a capsule containing the same luminescent material.

This model features a Helium escape valve which acts as a miniature decompression chamber for the watch: something essential for deep saturation diving. After a deep saturation dive, professional divers must spend time in a decompression chamber where they breathe a gas mixture containing helium. The tiny molecules of helium, an extremely light and non-volatile gas, infiltrate into the watch. During decompression, the helium is unable to escape from the waterproof case quickly enough, creating a pressure differential that could force the crystal out of the watch case.

Rolex engineers created a gas escape valve fitted with a spring: it opens when the difference in pressure between the inside and outside of the watch reaches between 3 and 5 bars. This allows the helium to escape without compromising the waterproofness of the watch.

The watch case is mounted to an 'Oyster' style bracelet which is closed with a folding clasp which features the patented Rolex 'Glidelock' extension system. This allows divers to adjust the length of the bracelet for a secure and comfortable fit over a diving suit, without the need for any tools. A toothed panel under the clasp cover provides an extension of up to 20 mm in 2 mm increments.

This 44mm watch was new in Sept 2014, comes with its box and paper(s) and is in very good condition. (Because of its age, this watch is just out of warranty. However, we will guarantee it for a full 12 months from the date of purchase for your peace of mind.)
